Persistence of Memory

I know you're there
crowding my thoughts and yet
still just out of sight and
beyond my hopeless reach.

I want so much to
be there for you,
to sooth your pain
and heal your wounds,
to stand guard between
that fragile young boy and
the wolves and the bears
who scar your life
and haunt your dreams.

But I never will as
I came later when
you had already become
the basement of my history.

I remember you but can
only dimly remember me.
